Project Spotlight: A Dream Pergola with a Swinging Bench

Q: What was the scope of the project? How did you approach it?
KOW: The goal was to create an inviting outdoor retreat where the homeowner could relax and enjoy Miami’s breathtaking sunsets over the lake. The 16x16-foot pergola needed to provide ample shade from the intense Florida sun while preserving unobstructed lake views from inside the home.
To add a modern twist to a classic pergola, we incorporated:
✔️ Bar tops on each post for added functionality
✔️ A 9-foot swinging bench that converts into a lounger or full-size bed
✔️ A spill-proof lip on the bench’s integrated side tables
Being so close to the water, we built and painted the pergola at ground level before using a pulley system to lift and secure it into place. The final step? Stress-testing the bench—two of our team members, each weighing 300 lbs., gave it a try. It passed with flying colors!
Q: How did the design process evolve?
Our client, a passionate musician and artist, wanted a space that would spark creativity and relaxation. With Lake Catalina’s stunning views, he envisioned a unique design that blended aesthetic beauty with functionality.
