You can find annuals, perennials, ground covers, and vines that all thrive in the winter season of Florida. All of which, when combined, can create a spectacular garden with bright, beautiful blooms in the winter months. Here are some tips for a winter garden:
- It is essential that you conduct regular watering in the winter season since it is considered the “dry season” when we do not get a lot of rainfall. A simple soaker hose can work wonders on a dry garden bed.
- Just as in the summer, ensure that the soil has a rich mix of organic matter and the proper fertilizer to help your plants thrive and bloom. Remember that the soil here is sandier than the soil in northern states.
- Some plants from the summer season are gorgeous year ‘round and you will want them to continue into the new winter layout. Prior to planting your new fall annuals, cut back any existing blooming plants that will remain. Find a way to integrate the new flowers into the color scheme that you have with the existing plants.
Another advantage to living in south Florida is that you can grow vegetables in the wintertime. Green vegetables tend to do really well at this time of the year. Now is the time to begin planning on the layout and types of flowers and vegetables that you want to grow. Winter is coming soon!
